Neurodiverse Family Travel Survey: Share Your Experience

Travelling with children can be challenging at the best of times, but travelling with a neurodiverse child can bring a completely different set of considerations.

Airports, queues, unfamiliar food, changes in routine, new accommodation, crowds, noise and long journeys can all have a much bigger impact on some children and their families.

At Holidays & Kiddos, I want to understand more about what travelling is really like for neurodiverse families — not just the good parts, but the things that make holidays harder, the things that help, and the changes families would like to see from the travel industry.

That is why I have created the Holidays & Kiddos Neurodiverse Family Travel Survey.

Why I’m running this survey

Holidays & Kiddos was created to provide practical information, ideas and reassurance for families travelling with neurodiverse children.

As a parent myself, I know that the things that make a holiday work for one family may be completely different for another.

Some children may struggle with airports.

Others may find unfamiliar accommodation difficult.

For some families, food can be one of the biggest challenges.

For others, crowds, waiting, sensory overload or safety concerns can completely change the type of holiday they feel able to book.

Rather than assuming what families need, I want to hear directly from parents and carers.

The aim of this survey is to build a clearer picture of the experiences neurodiverse families have when travelling.

Who can take part?

The survey is aimed at parents and carers of neurodiverse children.

This may include children with:

  • Autism

  • ADHD

  • Sensory processing differences

  • Developmental differences

  • Learning difficulties or disabilities

  • Anxiety

  • Other additional needs that affect travel

Your child does not necessarily need to have a formal diagnosis to take part.

Many families spend a long time waiting for assessments or diagnoses, and their experiences are just as important.

What will I ask?

The survey includes questions about areas such as:

  • Airports and flying

  • Crowds and queues

  • Changes to routine

  • Food

  • Accommodation

  • Sensory challenges

  • Safety concerns

  • What makes holidays easier

  • What you would like the travel industry to improve

There are also opportunities to share your own experiences if you would like to.

Most of the questions are multiple choice, so it should only take a few minutes to complete.

Is the survey anonymous?

Yes.

The survey is designed to be anonymous, and I am not asking you to provide your name.

Please avoid including names, addresses or other identifying information in any of the open-ended answers.

Responses may be grouped together and used to create statistics, articles and resources for Holidays & Kiddos.

For example, the results may help show how many families avoid certain types of holidays, which parts of travelling are most challenging, and what changes parents feel would make the biggest difference.

Individual responses will not be used to identify anyone.

Why your experience matters

One of the reasons I created Holidays & Kiddos was because I believe families need more realistic information about travelling with neurodiverse children.

Travel content often focuses on destinations, hotels and attractions.

But for many families, the bigger questions are things like:

Will my child cope with the airport?

What happens if they become overwhelmed?

Will there be somewhere quiet?

What if they refuse the food?

Will the accommodation work for us?

What happens if my child runs away in a crowded place?

These are the questions that can determine whether a family books a holiday at all.

By sharing your experience, you can help me create more useful content for other families and hopefully highlight some of the areas where the travel industry could do more.

Take the Neurodiverse Family Travel Survey

Thank you so much for taking part.

Whether your family travels regularly, has only taken one holiday, prefers UK breaks or currently finds travelling too difficult, your experience matters.

I hope the results will help Holidays & Kiddos build a more honest picture of what travelling is really like for neurodiverse families — and what could make it easier.
